kasipedia-academy-logoSouth Africa has massive learning inequalities, not dissimilar to the economic scenario in the country which “boasts” the highest Gini-coefficient in the world. Those in private schools and top state schools receive an education on par with the best anywhere, while those in rural and poorer areas have a throughput rate of less than 20%. The results of the education crisis can be seen in massive unemployment levels (approximately 25%), frightening crime rates and up to 50% of the population living below the poverty line. Government has acknowledged this challenge and has actively started seeking partnerships and collaborations within the private sector for initiatives to address the crisis.

In response to this crisis, Rooting Hope and Lightbulb Education partnered up for an initiative called Kasipedia Academy. The initiative exists to serve a public benefit purpose. Kasipedia Academy’s flagship offering is an internet-based educational platform with empowering content for Grade 8 – 12 students. They system is accessed by students through the internet using mobile phones, tablets, laptops or desktop computers, enhancing interactivity to focus the child’s attention on educational content.

The Kasipedia Academy will effectively offer a library of videos, worksheets, practice exercises in the form of multiple choice questions & written assessments, reports, and a personalized dashboard that empower learners, parents and teachers to study/tutor at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. The platform currently offers Mathematics, Physical Science, Accounting and Life Sciences.

“This initiative will significantly improve content delivery and management to students, parents and caregivers, while delivering other additional benefits that will positively impact the quality of education within the townships we’re targeting” said Tsholo Sehume, the Chairman of Rooting Hope.

We exercise some controls to ensure that we are on the right side of the law but be sure that the platform will show no ads and isn’t subscriptions based. Through negotiations and the generosity of donors, sponsors and volunteers we are able to avail the learning platform to learners anywhere in the country.

“The current difficult economic environment has brought about certain challenges for all sectors in the economy. We have seen an increase in the cost of providing quality education across most schools. For the education sector there has been a sharp increase in the cost of acquiring, distributing and managing educational content.” says Allan Mushabe (MD of Lightbulb Education).

Additional challenges exist for schools that come from increasing complexity in logistics, and administrative overhead for content distribution to learners.

The future activities of the Kasipedia Academy will also include innovative educational applications that bring positive and lasting change to the society.

The Kasipedia Academy value proposition and the outcome of the project is defined in terms of

  • Education & Skills development;
  • Use and creation of new knowledge, localisation and creation of intellectual property
  • Outreach and awareness creation

With a successful nationwide implementation we believe we will help significantly contribute to the country’s educational and strategic goals. Successful achievement of Kasipedia Academy’s objectives will in turn bring about positive fundamental shifts in education for learners, teachers and the school administration in our Kasi schools.

Tsholo Sehume continued to say “This is a huge achievement for us and a giant step in the right direction. It is, however, only the beginning. Our job now is to attract the right attention to help us enable the academy  and ensure that it reaches those students that need it the most. We will now start to engage mobile networks operators, volunteer tutors, teachers, parents, churches, content contributors, tablets/computer manufacturers, donors, sponsors and so forth. We need as much help as possible to reach these students.”

We’re looking for volunteers to help us with:

  • Fundraising
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Accounting & Finance
  • Operational efficiency
  • Program management
  • Volunteer Management & Engagement
  • Tutoring & Mentoring
  • etc.

We are a small team with a plan. We are taking it piece by piece by piece, and maybe you can help us. Contact us via info@kasipedia.com or info@rooting.co.za
